Cameroon's two pathways to Europe

Your language background opens different doors, and each has its own process.

🇫🇷

Francophone pathway

If you studied in French, France and Belgium are your most direct routes. France requires Campus France registration in Yaoundé before your visa application, this is mandatory and adds time. Tuition at French public universities is around €2,770–€3,770 per year.

🇬🇧

Anglophone pathway

If you studied in English, Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK are strong options. Germany offers free or near-free tuition at public universities but requires a blocked account of €11,208. The Netherlands has a wide range of English-taught programmes with the Holland Scholarship available.

💰

Proof of funds

Regardless of destination, proof of funds is the most common rejection reason. France requires €615/month minimum. Germany requires a blocked account of €11,208. Belgium requires approximately €835–€4,175/year in tuition plus living proof. Start building a documented financial record early.

Campus France, mandatory for France applications

If you are applying to study in France, you must register with Campus France Yaoundé before submitting your visa application. This is not optional. The process involves an interview and can take several weeks. Factor this into your timeline, do not leave it until after receiving an admission letter.

What Cameroonian students must prepare first

Cameroon has some of the most country-specific requirements in Africa, including document recognition requirements for Germany and Campus France for France. Missing either one wastes months. Book a session with Nathalie to make sure your timeline is right from the start.

1
Cameroon's passport process is online and fast, if you're in CameroonApply at dgsn.cm or passcam.cm, pay via Mobile Money or card (FCFA 110,000), book an in-person biometric appointment, and the passport is produced within 48 hours of successful enrolment. If you are already abroad, the process goes through your nearest Cameroonian embassy and takes approximately one month. In both cases, physical attendance for biometric capture is mandatory, no proxy applications.
2
Germany requires document recognition — your degree must be verified before you applyBefore applying to any German university, check the Anabin database (anabin.kmk.org) to see how your Cameroonian qualification is classified. A rating of H+ means direct entry. A rating of H may require a Studienkolleg foundation year. Many German universities process international applications through Uni-Assist, which also verifies your documents. All certificates must be accompanied by certified translations (beglaubigte Übersetzung) by a sworn translator. Cameroon is not in the Hague Convention, so documents need consular legalisation — apostille does not apply.
3
France requires Campus France registration before your visa, not afterIf you are applying to study in France, you must register with Campus France Yaoundé and attend an in-person interview before your visa application can be submitted. This is mandatory, it is not an optional advisory service. The process adds 4–8 weeks to your timeline. Factor this in before paying any university application fees.
4
Know which language track you are on, and test accordinglyCameroon's bilingual system is an advantage, but your language test depends on the country and programme. Francophone Cameroonians going to Germany still need IELTS or TestDaF for English/German programmes. Anglophone Cameroonians going to France need DELF/DALF B2 minimum. Confirm the language of instruction for your target programme before booking any test.
5
Your SOP must show specific programme knowledgeFor France, reference specific modules, laboratories, or research groups at your target institution, French universities and grandes écoles expect evidence that you understand what you are applying for. For Germany, your SOP is assessed alongside your academic documents — ensure your statement and your certified transcripts tell a consistent academic story. Generic letters are rejected early in both systems.
6
Authenticate documents through MINESUP and the Ministry of Foreign AffairsCameroonian academic documents must be certified by MINESUP (Ministry of Higher Education) before going to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for legalisation. Cameroon is not a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, so consular legalisation applies, a longer and more document-intensive process than apostille countries. For the Netherlands, specific additional legalisation steps apply. Verify requirements per destination country before starting.
