The visa reality for Ghanaian students

Understanding this before you apply saves time, money, and disappointment.

📋

What visa do you need?

For study longer than 90 days, you need a national long-stay (Type D) visa from the specific country's embassy, not a standard Schengen visa. Each country has its own process and timeline. Apply at least 3–4 months before your intended start date.

💰

Proof of funds, the biggest hurdle

Ghanaian students must prove they can cover tuition and living costs. Germany requires a blocked account of €11,208. France requires proof of at least €615/month. Bank statements are scrutinised closely, consistency and source of funds matter as much as the amount.

⚠️

Why applications get rejected

The most common reasons for Ghanaian student visa rejections: insufficient proof of funds, inability to demonstrate ties to Ghana (intent to return), weak or missing SOP, inconsistent documentation, and unverified institutions. Preparation before applying is essential.

Important, Ghana visa rejection rate

In 2024, over 43% of Schengen visa applications from Ghana were rejected. Ghana has one of the highest rejection rates in West Africa. The most common reasons are insufficient proof of funds and weak documentation. A well-prepared, consistent application significantly improves your chances.

What Ghanaian students must prepare first

These are the steps most Ghanaian applications fall short on. Work through them carefully, or book a 45-minute session with Nathalie to get a personalised plan before you apply.

1
Ghana's new passport system is fast, use it earlySince April 2025, Ghana's chip-embedded biometric passport takes 15 working days for standard applications and just 5 working days for expedited service. Free doorstep delivery is now available nationwide. Apply through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, not the Ghana Immigration Service, which handles border control only. Even with the faster system, apply well before you need it.
2
Authenticate transcripts through GES, the Judicial Service, then MFARIAcademic documents in Ghana follow a three-step chain: Ghana Education Service (GES) or National Accreditation Board certification → High Court notarisation → Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration (MFARI) authentication. Ghana is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, which simplifies the process for most European countries compared to Nigeria or Mozambique. Still allow 4–6 weeks for the full chain.
3
Build steady bank history, not a last-minute depositEuropean embassies scrutinise Ghanaian bank statements closely. A lump sum deposited close to your application date is one of the most common and easily avoidable rejection reasons. Show 3–6 months of consistent transaction history. Germany requires a blocked account of €11,208 (2025/26). Portugal requires approximately €870/month. Start your financial preparation the same month you start researching universities.
4
You may not need a language test, but confirm earlyGhana's English education system means no language test is needed for English-taught programmes. However, for German-language programmes in Germany, TestDaF or DSH is required. For French-taught programmes in France or Belgium, DELF/DALF B2 minimum is expected. Confirm the language of instruction for your specific programme before assuming you are exempt.
5
Write a programme-specific SOP, not a general letterGerman universities in particular assess how well applicants understand the specific programme they are applying for. Referencing modules, research areas, or faculty by name significantly strengthens your application. A generic SOP that could apply to any university is one of the most common reasons Ghanaian applications stall at the shortlisting stage.
6
Be alert to fake Campus France and DAAD scamsGhana has a growing number of unregistered agents, particularly those targeting students applying to France (fake Campus France registration services) and Germany (fraudulent DAAD scholarship claims). Campus France registration must be done directly through the official Campus France office. DAAD applications are submitted directly to DAAD, no legitimate third party charges a fee to submit on your behalf.
